Schools are declared holidays in Thanksgiving celebrations. Heavy discounts take place in stores. These days some businesses can also distribute free meals and drinks. So, when is Thanksgiving celebrated?

Thanksgiving is celebrated with activities of being with family, spending time together. Thanksgiving is a celebration day based in the United States and Canada. It is celebrated for the harvest and for all the blessings of the past year. Thanksgiving is celebrated on different dates in Canada and the United States.

What is Thanksgiving?

The feast has various origins. According to a rumor, the Wampanoag Tribe observed that the English settlers (pilgrims), who first set foot in the Americas at Plymouth in 1621, had yet to adjust to the geography of the region. He found that they struggled with hunger because of their inability to produce crops that they were accustomed to from Europe. The tribe took pity on the plight of the new settlers and shared their own prey and crops with benevolence and hospitality. It is this celebration that emerges from the peaceful coming together of the two communities. It has been an inspiration and model.

According to a different rumor, this feast began in November 1621 when pilgrims went to hunt poultry en masse and captured enough animals for a week for their group of 50 people. In the story it has been suggested that these animals were turkeys. But they are more likely to be goose and duck, which are easier to hunt. In any case, following this fertile event a group of Wampanoag locals of about 90 men arrived at the Plymouth camp, which at that time consisted of few buildings yet. Although the English settlers were first unsettled by this unexpected visit, the groups soon fused. A common feast was held for several days with the venison that the Indians brought with them as gifts. This feast, which took place sporadically in the open field, consumed deer and poultry, as well as possibly seafood, vegetables and beer. Because of the language barrier, the groups that could get along, organized games and competitions between them, and detonated guns. Emerging as a celebration of a fruitful harvest and common blessings, this feast has become customary as Thanksgiving.

This event also laid the foundations for a peace between the two sides that would last until the war of King Philip. Hundreds of colonists and thousands of Indians lost their lives in this war, which took place between 1675 and 1678 and ended with the Casco Bay horseback.
